Brussels: 90% of Muslim teens call jihad murderers heroes

Blaming Policy, Not Islam, for Belgium’s Radicalized Youth

BRUSSELS — Yves Goldstein makes no excuses for Belgium’s failure to find Salah Abdeslam and the other Islamic State recruits who attacked Paris and then bombed Brussels Airport and a subway station.

The problem is not Islam, he insists, but the negligence of government officials like himself in allowing self-contained ethnic ghettos to grow unchallenged, breeding anger, crime and radicalism among youth — a soup of grievances that suits Islamist recruiters.

“Our cities are facing a huge problem, maybe the largest since World War II,” Mr. Goldstein said. “How is it that people who were born here in Brussels, in Paris, can call heroes the people who commit violence and terror? That is the real question we’re facing.”

Friends who teach the equivalent of high school seniors in the predominantly Muslim districts of Molenbeek and Schaerbeek told him that “90 percent of their students, 17, 18 years old, called them heroes,” he said.

Mr. Goldstein, 38, grew up in Schaerbeek, the child of Jewish refugees from Nazism. Now a councilman from Schaerbeek, he is also chief of staff for the minister-president of the Brussels Capital Region.

Schaerbeek is almost as infamous these days as Molenbeek, two districts where Mr. Abdeslam and his group of Islamic State adherents had the space and time to live, hide and manufacture their weapons.

Adjacent to Molenbeek, Schaerbeek is richer, tidier and more mixed. Jacques Brel lived here for a time, so did René Magritte. It has a young, affluent section, which some compare to Notting Hill in London, and a large Turkish population.

The townhouse where preparations were made for the Paris attacks and where Mr. Abdeslam sought refuge for weeks is in the Turkish area, which is more well-to-do, and a better place to hide.

Brussels itself is about 25 percent Muslim — 70 percent are of Moroccan heritage and 20 percent Turkish, and the ethnic groups tend to stick to themselves, making them difficult for outsiders, like the police, to penetrate.

Belgium’s integration has been somewhere between the French model, which put new immigrants in suburban ghettos, and the British and American one, which created communities like Chinatown or Little Italy, Mr. Goldstein said. “In Brussels, everyone lives in the city, and we chose a model of diversity through mixing of populations in the same neighborhoods.”

But “we failed,” he said. “We failed in Molenbeek” and Schaerbeek, too, to ensure the mixing of populations.

“We have neighborhoods where people only see the same people, go to school with the same people,” he said. “What connection do they have with the whole society, what connection do they have with real diversity? It’s the establishment of the ghetto,” he said, “and it’s the thing in our urban development that we have to tackle.”

Jews have left Schaerbeek, and the last two synagogues are being sold. Instead, there is a kind of suffocating, insular, ethnic uniformity. “These young people will never go to museums until 18 or 20 — they never saw Chagall, they never saw Dalí, they never saw Warhol, they don’t know what it is to dream,” Mr. Goldstein said.

Of course there is poverty and unemployment, he said. “But we don’t give these young people the keys to think differently, to think outside the little box, the little neighborhood where they live — this ideological box, this closed-eyes box.”

As for the terrorists, “religion for them is a pretext,” he said. “They believe in nothing. But Islam is the way they find to express, to crystallize their radicalization.”

Young people whose parents or grandparents were immigrants face serious questions of identity, Mr. Goldstein acknowledged, speaking during and after a conference here of the German Marshall Fund. “But identity is a two-sided relation” — between young Muslims and ourselves.

“We have to fight racism and discrimination with the same force” as radicalization, he said, because “our society gives to these young people a bad idea of who and what they are.”

  1. Yet another evidence that muslim youth born and raised in the west are much more radical then their original immigrant parents or grandparents ever were.
So how come that these second and third generation European muslims are so radical in their views? One needs to look no further then toward ourselves, towards the majority of us in the west. We are constantly electing crooked politicians, who are all bought and paid for by the oil-rich Arab nations. And most of those oil-rich Arabs in the Persian Gulf area adhere to the most radical view of Islam, Salafism, which also gave birth to ISIS. Our politicians (whom we have elected!) see absolutely nothing wrong in the fact that the majority of Imam’s and Sheikh’s that are coming into Europe to teach these second and third generation Muslims are actually coming from Saudi and Qatari religious schools, that teach them the most violent form of Islam. Our politicians are completely ok with that, because these Salafi nations like Saudi Arabia and Qatar control our politicians.
Either we in the west are going to start electing politicians who recognize the problem, or we might as well might become “dhimmi’s” for those Salafists right now.

    • Muslims are always sleeper cells, in any society or country they live in. They lay low and awaken to their duty when they grow in numbers and see that their infidel enemy is weakened and can be overtaken.

      • I agree. They are sleeper cells, even if they themselves still do not know it. But my frustration is that we ourselves are often the ones who activate them, by this previously mentioned example of bringing thousands of Salafi Imam’s and Sheikh’s into Europe to teach them how to become just like Muhammad, i.e. savages.
They sleep, but our stupidity and naivety activates them!
Just look at what happened previously to this Bruxelles attack. Belgian authorities knew that those two deported from Turkey into Netherlands were trying to join ISIS, and what did the Belgian authorities do about it? Nothing.
Their police even knew the address of their hideout months before the attack took place, yet their incompetent police misplaced the file and never raided the address!
What can I say? The majority of westerners are brain-dead zombies and they predominately elect the most treacherous politicians they can. No wonder that we are being overrun by these barbarian hordes.

  2. Remember fascism? Maybe most of you are too young. Islam is fascism disguised as religion. This is a fact and discussing it will not change the truth. Pre-conceived notions are going to be the death of liberty since fascism and liberty cannot coexist. Look at the behavior of fascists in the past and the behavior of these so called religious zealots. THE SAME!

    • I know. Jamie Glazov often points to these parallels between Islam and all the 20th century tyrannical regimes, such as communism and fascism, on his youtube shows. They are indeed exactly the same!

This tired argument holds no water. The primary reason that Muslim immigrants do not assimilate is their open hatred of Western democracy and society. The majority has no interest in integrating or assimilating. In one YouTube video I watched, a Muslim man spoke the truth, from his perspective which mirrors that of many in the Muslim world ‘it is either democracy or sharia’.

Their way of thinking is very black and white, no nuance. What ‘the prophet’ said in their ‘holy book’ in incontestable for Muslims, though there are varying degrees of intolerance and violence. The view that Europe has somehow failed the immigrants overlooks their behavior throughout the world, regardless of economic circumstance, there is widespread violence, fueled by hateful attitudes. Often it is Muslim versus Muslim, as can be seen around the Middle East, and this has gone on for centuries.

Just yesterday on CNN, it was reported that the number of jihadists now living in Europe numbers into the thousands, some having gone to fight with ISIS and coming back into the EU, and some simply ‘inspired’ by them or similar radical Islamic groups. They are a malignant cell growing in the heart of Europe. It is no wonder that border fences are going up all around Europe, the latest being Austria … the message being ‘we want no more of you’. That is not racist, it is a legitimate concern about vast numbers of people flooding into Europe with values antithetical, and deeply hostile, to those of the West.

  4. Filthy, stupid, evil Moslem SCUM never take responsibility for their actions. It’s always someone else’s fault. Time to just kill this scum outright. No jail. No trial. Just strip ’em naked, cut off their peckers and shoot ’em in the face.
