All over Europe there is talk of paring back public spending to stave off concern in the financial markets about the high levels of sovereign debt. Some of the cuts proposed are extraordinary in scope. For example, in the UK, there is talk of trimming the military budget in a way not seen in the post-WWII era. Radical reforms of the welfare state are being bruited about. The story is similar elsewhere.What’s missing, of course, is any big picture analysis of why this has come about. Of course, to some degree, it is a reaction to the recent recession. But there have been plenty of recessions in the post-WWII era and the recent one has not been significantly worse than some of the others.
